Personal Fitness 3 builds strength

The new class will give students a chance to learn the ins and outs of becoming a personal trainer and students can even get a certificate

WS is offering a new class next year in the form of Personal Fitness 3, but it probably isn’t what you’d think.
Personal Fitness 1 and 2 are weight lifting classes, with personal fitness 2 being harder and more advanced than PF 1. One would expect that PF3 would be a harder lifting class, but it’s not. It’s much more than that. The class, which only requires completion of PF 1 and PE 9 and 10, is more like a personal trainer’s training class.
“We administer the American Council on Exercise (ACE) curriculum among other things,” said Personal Fitness teacher Brendan Campbell.
Half of the class will be spent in the classroom learning about subjects important to personal trainers, such as how to develop a fitness program for different kinds of people, proper weight lifting form, as well as resume building and interview skills. The other half of the class will be spent in the weight room, giving students an opportunity to teach proper form and weight lifting etiquette.
“The students know how to lift, we want to put an emphasis on making sure they can teach it,” said Campbell.
The best part about the class, however, is at the end when the students have a chance to earn a personal training certification. The ACE fitness certification will allow students to pursue a career as a personal trainer and get a job at one of the many local gyms.
“We called a bunch of gyms in the area and they all said they preferred the ACE [above other certifications],” said Campbell.
This class would be a good idea for anyone who wants a career in fitness or a health related industry and, can have many advantages to student athletes. Some of those advantages include improving leadership in the weight room and learning how to teach. PF3 can be hugely beneficial to students and is worth looking into if you have an extra elective spot.
“PF3 is a great idea; it teaches students great life skills and can help them discover a career path that many students may not have known existed,” said senior Daniel Large,” I would definitely recommend this class.”
